Remembering Hampsthwaite’s Blind Joiner - an article by Shaun WilsonLike the market town of Knaresborough, who had ‘Blind Jack’ – John Metcalf, the road builder of Yorkshire in the eighteenth century, the small rural village of Hampsthwaite had it’s blind hero also, almost a century later – Peter Barker who became known as ‘The Blind Joiner of Hampsthwaite.’ Though there are some similarities between John Metcalf and Peter Barker’s lives, these are purely co-incidental and each fulfilled a life, character and career in their own right.

Arsenic Poisoning in Hampsthwaite - The Execution of Hannah Whitley
In 1789, Hannah Whitley of Hampsthwaite used a pie as the delivery medium for a fatal dose of arsenic, with the poison concentrated in the crust. She claimed She had been coerced into the act of poisoning by her employer, a local linen weaver named Horseman, who was involved in an on-going feud with the intended victim.

A highly successful composer of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, Amy Woodforde-Finden, together with her husband and step-son, is laid to rest in the churchyard of St Thomas à Becket Parish Church. Inside the church there is an impressive marble monument of her, created by the renowned sculptor George Edward Wade. It was unveiled in 1923 and a few years later, Finden Gardens in Hampsthwaite was named in her honour.[Click on title or image to link to articles]

Desk Lamp from Upcycled Demi-John
Table Lamp Base An unusual vintage brown glass Demi-John upcycled to create a lamp base which would complement both modern and traditional home interiors. The Demi-John base is 330mm high approximately and 170mm diameter. The lamp is fitted with all new 3-core black electric cable with in-line switch connecting to an Edison Screw (ES) lamp fitting secured via a 10mm diameter threaded brass bung. The cable enters the Demi-John at its base via a grommet filled hole drilled for this purpose and secured with cable restraint. The lamp is supplied complete with a 3 in 1 LED warm white 95mm diameter globe shaped bulb: i.e. switch on for full brightness; switch off and quickly on again for 30% dimming; then switch off. Also supplied with a 200mm fabric covered burgundy drum shade to complement the brown Demi-John base resulting in an overall height of approximately 500mm.

Vintage Blowlamps upcycled into a unique dimmable Desk, Table or Accent lights supplied complete with a flame tip bulb.
The inline dimmer switch enables the amount of light to vary from full brightness down to a gentle glow - excellent for 'mood' lighting.
Each blowlamp is stripped down to its separate parts before being cleaned, washed, buffed and polished. Parts are machined as required to accommodate fittings (e.g. boring out the Flame Tube to receive the light fitting and maintain good proportions) then reassembled to create the body of the lamp and fitted with all new 3-core electrics. The brass lamp fitting is fully earthed and the whole lamp earth continuity PAT tested.

Plane 'n Simple Dimmable Desk Lamp
These lamps are upcycled from a vintage wooden smoothing plane and fitted with a Dimmer Switch to control their brightness in different situations - excellent for 'mood' lighting. A glass vial is recessed into the front of the plane, which can accept pens and pencils to complement its function as a Desk Lamp - or a dried flower perhaps to add a little cheer! Each plane is stripped down to its separate parts before being cleaned, linseed oiled, waxed and polished - but still retaining the patina, bumps and bruises reflecting years of honest toil! Parts are machined as required to accommodate fittings (e.g. wedge drilled through) then reassembled to create the body of the lamp.
Pitch Pine Candle Trays
Pitch Pine Candle TraysHand made stylish trays made from reclaimed Pitch Pine which has been chosen for its striking and contrasting grain. Each tray is hand finished to a lustrous wax sheen and recesses are machined to receive either: battery operated LED Tea Light Candle, Votive Candles in Glass, or Pillar Candles as required. The trays are made using 25mm thick wonderfully scented Pitch Pine. Standard trays are 360mm or 600mm long and accept 3 or 5 candles but can be made to order. The completed Candle Trays will grace any dining table or mantlepiece. Alternatively enjoy late summer and autumn evenings using them to bring an ethereal soft glow to any garden setting or barbecue. Supplied complete with Candles. The trays are hand made in-house and so please ask for any variations required in terms of number and type of Lights, their spacing, overall dimensions and wood finishes.

Vintage contact printing frames which have been cleaned, oiled and waxed to result in a self-standing photo frame - ideal for displaying either portrait or landscape photographs, prints, artwork or pressed flowers etc.
The frames are complete with all original clips in full working order and they have been used to secure a new support strut without the need for any modification of the original structure.
